History:

Originally entitled 'The Comedy of Love' and published in 1942 as 'Trial Horse N. 1', Many Loves was first produced by The Living Theatre in New York in 1959 where it ran successfully for almost a year. In 1961 they took it to Paris, performing it alongside 'The Connection' (Jack Gelber's Drama of drug addiction) and Brecht's 'In the Jungle of the Cities'. They won the Grand Prix of the Theatre des Nations, and the Paris Theatre Critics Circle awarded the entire company its medal for best acting. That summer, they toured Europe with the three plays, playing Milan, Frankfurt, Berlin, Zagreb, Belgrade and Athens, all 'to the tremendous acclaim of audiences of a thousand and fifteen hundred people'. Since then the play has largely been neglected, with the notable exception of Medicine Show's successful 1993 production in New York. It has yet to be performed in the UK.
